Leap Second

Leap second! Yeah everyones heard of a leap year, a leap year happens every 4 years, this is beacause a years is not made up of 365 days but its 365 1/4 days to be not really that exact. so every 4 years all the quarter days are added up to make up a leap year. A leap year will thus have 366 days.

Now what about a leap second, a leap second happens beacause the earth moves a tad slower than atomic clock, an atomic clock is what our current civil time is. The earth based on the occurence of sun rise and sun set is not exactly 24 hours, it is in fact 1.4 miliseconds slower everyday. This is roughly caused by the breaking action of waves and some astronomical occurence such as solar winds.

Therefore at the start of a new year, the atomic clock all over the world are added a second to sychronise with the earths movement although you can't actually really sychronise 2 clocks.
