Elephant Killers!
This is very disturbing news, as the Malaysia Wildlife Department in Terengganu is going to resort to culling 1 or 2 elephants every year if they continue to be a menace to the vilagers in the rural area. It is said also that Terengganu has about 120 elephants around while Pahang may have more. In 1999 there is an estimated of 1000+ elephants in the Peninsular Malaysia.
 Asian Elephants are categorized as endangered species by wwf and is listed in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. So why is the Malaysia Wildlife Department in Terengganu is allowed to cull any of this endangered species? It is said that these elephants are a menace to the villagers, elephants would destroy their plantations...but to think of it, elephant are among the most gracious animal on this planet! If you do not bother them, these elephants will not bother you! It is when us humans encroach in to their habitat. We often clear up land for plantation and developement and force this elephants out of their habitat! Now they are saying that elephants are a menace to them? Whos menacing who?
So who was bothering who first? It seems that killing of endangered species is legal to the Wildlife Departments and illegal to others. Justify that... You do not cull endangered species when  This was in the news today that an elephant was drowned to death, it was believed that the elephant was a "menace" to the vilagers and a relocation exercise was done in Hulu Terengganu on Oct 21. Rangers from the Wildlife Department had fired 2 darts at the elephant and1 managed to hit it, the elephant drowned when it fell into the river. How can something like this happen? Accordin to this Ahmad Shamsuddin from the department - “We are sad we could not save it despite meticulous planning,”

True we always hear that the elephants have to go because some villager's plantation or orchard is being raided for food. Though we symphatise with the farmers we have to give thought that we humans are invading their habitat not the other way round. Relocation is ok if one becomes rogue but culling? A few hundred elephants is not a lot and culling 1 or 3 a year to reduce numbers does not factor in illegal killings of the elephants. Give thought to the pachederms. A better way is to come up with a compensation scheme like those being applied in India where tigers at times kill cattle. It's a sad day for elephants in Malaysia.
Hey ... since human are invading elephant's habitat and there are like a few million of us, lets cull some vllagers instead, so they'll stop clearing lands for plantation and since we are culling lets cull wildlife department officers as they are useless in protecting the wildlife...
